Five-week adult beginner course
Start jiu-jitsu the right way.
Learn jiu-jitsu alongside other beginners in a small, structured course built for safety, confidence, and steady progress.
Everything you need to begin
Ten classes. Five weeks. One clear path forward.
Jiu-jitsu can feel chaotic when you first step onto the mat. Foundations gives you a roadmap, a group of people starting beside you, and coaches who know exactly what beginners need.
Why Jiu Jitsu?
A martial art you can test, trust, and keep practicing.
Brazilian jiu-jitsu is built around solving real physical problems against a partner who is actively resisting. That makes it practical, honest, and surprisingly approachable.
Effective under resistance
You do not only memorize techniques. You practice timing, balance, escapes, and control against partners who are trying to stop you. That live feedback shows you what actually works.
Safer to practice for real
Training can be challenging without relying on repeated punches or kicks. Partners can increase resistance gradually, and the tap gives everyone a clear way to stop before a submission goes too far.
Accessible to ordinary people
Jiu-jitsu uses leverage, positioning, and smart decisions to reduce dependence on raw strength and speed. You can adjust the pace and keep improving from many different starting fitness levels.
No martial art makes anyone invincible. Jiu-jitsu gives you repeatable ways to stay composed, escape bad positions, get back to your feet, or control someone without needing to trade punches.
A better first step
Begin with a plan, not a trial by fire.
You do not need to be athletic, experienced, or “in shape first.” You just need a place that knows how to teach beginners.

Fall Foundations
Your starting line is October 14.
Ten beginner-focused classes, Wednesdays and Fridays at 6:00 PM.
What you’ll learn
Practical skills that connect.
The course is built around a larger, more athletic, untrained opponent, with ideas that also transfer directly into recreational jiu-jitsu.
Make strong connections that lead safely to takedowns and control.
Use hooks, frames, and two-on-one grips to create or collapse space.
Bring bigger opponents to the ground without relying on brute force.
Turn your legs into powerful tools for control, trips, and entanglements.
Manage aggressive opponents, stay safe, and let them exhaust themselves.
Recognize and use the predictable reactions of an untrained opponent.
From people who started where you are
Beginners belong here.
I completed the five-week course with a solid grasp of the basic principles of jiu-jitsu that I could continue to build on. They make it approachable regardless of age, experience, or fitness level.
If you weren’t sure you could ever do something like jiu-jitsu, trust me, you can at this place. Even as a brand-new, non-athletic person, I felt like I belonged from the beginning.
The smaller class sizes create a more personal and comfortable learning environment. Every coach is kind, patient, and willing to answer questions.
What happens after I complete the course?
You’ll be invited to join our all-levels classes, where you can keep building your skills, explore more positions and submissions, and train with the wider Beacon community.
Do we spar in Foundations?
There is no open, full-contact sparring. Instead, classes end with focused games that let you safely explore the day’s theme against an actively resisting partner.
Is this a self-defense course?
Self-defense is part of the course, but not the whole course. We focus on the problems created by a larger, more athletic, untrained opponent. The same fundamentals also transfer to recreational jiu-jitsu.
I have martial arts experience. Is this for me?
If you have trained Brazilian jiu-jitsu and are a one-stripe white belt or higher, you may be ready for our all-levels classes. You’re still welcome to take Foundations as a structured refresher.
Do I need to attend every class?
Missing a class happens. We provide video recaps so you can catch up. Come to the majority of the ten sessions and you’ll be in good shape.
Do I need to buy anything else?
No. Your Beacon gi and white belt are included in the $149 course price, and there is no long-term contract.
